Mexico’s President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, announced that his administration will seek to create a telecommunications company whose objective will be to guarantee access to the Internet and mobile telephony throughout Mexico’s territory. The president added that he spoke at length about this objective with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.
“I explained that we are going to create a telecommunications company and what we are looking for him to be an associate, but the State will have a telecommunication company to guarantee connectivity through internet and mobile telephony in the country… I already spoke with the members of the (IFT) to request a concession for the optical fiber… ”
The Mexican president has already proposed a concession for 50,000 kilometers of optical fiber from the Federal Electricity Commission to bring Internet coverage to the whole country, in a bidding process that will be open to various telecommunications companies. In case this contest attracts no bidders, the federal administration would seek to create a parastatal company.
