Spain: Regulator seeking fine on Vodafone over broken interconnection agreement

Spanish competition regulator CNMC has announced it will launch an investigation into mobile operator Vodafone over its blocking of several telephone numbers. The move, the watchdog says, would violate existing interconnection and compatibility agreements.

    Vodafone suspended interconnection privileges to eight telephone numbers (classed 118XX) without going through the approved procedures or notifying the affected parties or the CNMC. some of these numbers had been disconnected for two years over what Vodafone claims to be irregular use. The company has not yet produced proof of irregularities in the remaining.

    Vodafone’s actions could represent a failure to comply with a 2013 resolution which established the procedures for suspending irregular numbers, issued by the former CMT. Should the violation be confirmed, Spanish authorities may slap the mobile operator with fines and other sanctions.
