US: Judge pushes settlement forward

U.S. District Judge Joy Flowers Conti said Wednesday that she intends to approve a proposed partial settlement of a long-running antitrust lawsuit involving two of the region’s largest health care companies.

    Lawyers for UPMC and Cole’s Wexford Hotel Inc. were ordered to submit an amended settlement so that Judge Coti can certify the settlement class and approve the agreement.

    UPMC tentatively had agreed back in February to pay $12.5 million to settle the Pine business’ claim that the medical giant and Highmark Inc. conspired to keep insurance competitors out of Western Pennsylvania, allowing a Highmark for-profit subsidiary to charge small-group subscribers more for insurance.

    Both companies deny the allegations.
