Spain: Broadcasters fined 100 million Euros

Atresmedia and Mediaset España may face millions in fines from the National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) over “unjustifiably impeding the entry and growth of third-party operators in the television advertising market in Spain.”

    The CNMC has concluded that it could not accept a list of commitments – without a penalty – from repeat offenders who have repeatedly been sanctioned for failing to comply with the relevant measures: a single guideline to force advertisers to invest in third chains, demand for advertising fees and penalties.

    Mediaset España has publicly rejected this resolution, confirming that it will proceed to immediately challenge it before the competent bodies.

    “This resolution is not surprising given the animosity publicly displayed repeatedly by the president of the CNMC …” Mediaset said.
