Apple Maps Goes Shopping

Courtesy of indoor mapping capabilities, Apple is attempting to push their Apple Maps software to the next level by delivering directions indoors.

The Patent application describes a method of seamlessly transitioning from a map displaying exterior elements to indoor components, such as stores and restaurants.

The new capability will be designed and intended to work with iBeacons, Apple’s implementation of Bluetooth low-energy (BLE) wireless technology designed to make iPhones and other iOS devices.

See below for a depiction of how Apple Maps would transition from outdoor to indoor views.

Apple Ups Google Maps With Indoor Directions

The new capability would be ideal for things like searching for an open parking space. With the use of its outdoor-to-indoor mapping technology, Apple Maps will be able to first direct users to a car garage and then to a specific car space once inside the garage.

The indoor mapping information provided would vary based upon the type of building. For example, if someone were to enter a shopping mall, the additional information provided could include the location and name of each store within the mall, how to get to a specific store, current sales, store coupons, and show times if there happens to be a theater located inside the shopping center.

While users are within areas of retail, Apple Maps could then provide additional information such as sales at a particular store that offers Apple Pay as a form of payment.
