Is eBay Shutting Down Its Local Delivery Service?

Earlier this week it was reported that eBay was shutting down its local delivery service, eBay Now. Various sources spoke with VentureBeat and explained that while the service was only launched two years ago, things have allegedly not been running smoothly.

For example, eBay fired its “valet” team in April and deliveries were shifted to third-party couriers.

“It’s so much more than just a delivery service,” a former eBay Now valet told the news source. “It’s a personal shopping service. As such, it requires a special touch on each and every order. That’s difficult to obtain under the model eBay has chosen to pursue.”

An eBay spokesperson spoke with the news source, and explained that it “will continue to test and evaluate local capabilities that bring new services and solutions to our retail partners and seamlessly connect buyers and sellers through shipping, delivery, or in-store pick-up.”

VentureBeat reported that later, a spokesperson reached out with a stronger denial about the local delivery service being shut down, saying that “there are no plans to shut down our same day delivery offering.”

However, the spokesperson refused to comment when asked if eBay Now will shut down within the next year,.
