When a customer’s payment fails at checkout, the clock starts ticking immediately. Some companies’ systems can instantly retry the payment or send it to another processor. Other firms can only watch that failure happen, knowing it may damage the customer relationship.
Not all industries are making the most of their payment infrastructure. In the last year, fewer than three in 10 companies overall reported a meaningful improvement to checkout completion due to payment orchestration or optimization, while 53% of finance and infrastructure firms reported the same. That performance gap reflects how much control different industries have over their payments and how easily they can change the machinery underneath the checkout.
The latest edition of the PYMNTS Intelligence Orchestration Advantage series, created in collaboration with Spreedly, reveals an industry-by-industry picture of who can act on payment problems, who is still building the necessary infrastructure and what stands in the way. The report draws from a survey of 110 U.S. companies with $10 million or more in annual revenue across five industry sectors, fielded from March 16-31, 2026.
