Apple released a report Wednesday (July 20) highlighting how its devices are offering actionable health insights to users while also supporting the medical community by providing information for research and care.

According to the new report, users, developers, medical institutions and health organizations worldwide are tapping devices, features and application programming interfaces (APIs) to “break down barriers between people and their health information,” while also keeping privacy top of mind.

“We believe passionately that technology can play a role in improving health outcomes and encouraging people to live a healthier day,” Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer, said in a press release.

Williams added that aside from users reaping the upsides of Apple’s health and fitness features, the tech is being used by many third-party developers, institutions and organizations to advance health and science.

More than 150 varieties of health data from Apple Watch, iPhone and connected third-party apps and devices can be stored in the Health app, per the release. Additionally, health records from connected institutions in the U.S., U.K. and Canada can also be stored in the Health app.

“Our vision for the future is to continue to create science-based technology that equips people with even more information and acts as an intelligent guardian for their health, so they’re no longer passengers on their own health journey,” Williams said. “Instead, we want people to be firmly in the driver’s seat with meaningful, actionable insights.”

Apple’s health app was released in 2014, and the Apple Watch followed a year later. Since then, the Silicon Valley tech giant has rolled out numerous health and fitness-related components to help people gain useful data around their health.

The company’s health and fitness features offer users a secure, central location to store and view their health data while also providing third-party app developers with tools, per the release.

The fall release of iOS 16 and watchOS 9 will expand the health and fitness features to focus on 17 areas, including heart health and mobility.
