Survey on Consumers Usage of Mobile Wallets

We conducted a survey of approximately 2,000 consumer transactions.

The transactions considered where those transactions in which the consumer could have used a mobile wallet if the consumer had wanted to; this means two things are true:

- The consumer has a device which is compatible with the mobile wallet.

- The consumer shopped at a physical store location which accepts the mobile wallet as a valid form of payment.

We conducted four different surveys: Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Walmart Pay and Android Pay.

The transactions for each wallet are defined as follows:

- Apple Pay: people with an iPhone that is compatible with Apple Pay who made a purchase at a store that accepts Apple Pay.

- Android Pay: people with a Android OS smartphone that is compatible with Android Pay (i.e. supports NFC) and who made a purchase at a store that accepts Android Pay.*

- Samsung Pay: it means people with a Samsung smartphone that is compatible with Samsung Pay and who made a purchase at any retail store in the US.*

- Walmart Pay: people with any type of smartphone who made a purchase at any Walmart location.*

Smartphone Usage in the United States

There are 252.8mm adults in the U.S. in 2017.

About 11% of smartphone users are children under the age of 18. eMarketer data estimates that in 2017 there will be 229.1 mm smartphone users in the U.S. (195.0 mm of those are adults).

eMarketer also has data on the percentage of smartphone users that Apple, Android and Samsung Devices.

There are a total of 195 mm adults that use smartphones (77.1% of the adult population).

- 84.8 mm adults that use Apple devices (33.5% of adults)

- 101.4 mm adults that use Android devices (40.1% of adults)

- Of these Android devices, 64.8 mm are Samsung devices (22.8% of adults)

Wallet Usage on Smartphones in the United States

The usage of wallet adoption is measured as a percentage of total smartphone users so we can account for the wallets that can or can not be used on a particular device.

- Apple Pay: May only be used on Apple Devices (Excluding the iPhone 5 and earlier).

- Android Pay: May only be used on and NFC enabled Android devices.

- Walmart Pay: Can be used on any smartphone (as long as the app can be downloaded*)

- Samsung Pay: Can only be used on Samsung devices that are compatible.

Currently, the overall share of smartphones that are compatible with mobile wallets is very high. This use of compatible phones has been increasing over the last couple of years.

Wallet Usage on Smartphones as a percentage of adults that have smartphones in the U.S.

We see much higher overall usage of Walmart Pay because the method can be used by anyone with a smartphone.

- Walmart pay would be limited because it can only be used at Walmart which is less than 10% of total retail sales.

Apple Pay is the next most common but still only 13% of smartphone owners have ever tried it and only 3% of smartphone users actually used it during their most recent shopping trip.

Samsung Pay and Android Pay have approximately the same overall usage even though There are more Android devices (Samsung is a portion of all Android devices).

Current Usage of Apple Pay

There are 252.8 mm adults (18 years and older) in the United States.

195.0 (77%) of adults have smartphones.

Apple Pay can only be used on iPhones and 43.5% of smartphone users use and iPhone.

29.4% of users with iPhones have set up apple pay and used it at least once in the past.

- 24.9 mm (12.8%) of 195.0mm US adults with smartphones have tired Apple Pay.

23.1% of all users that set up Apple Pay, used Apple Pay during the last transaction.

- 5.8 mm (6.8%) of 84.8mm US adults that have an iPhone used Apple Pay the last time they went into a store that accepts Apple Pay.

Current Usage of Walmart Pay

There are 252.8 mm adults (18 years and older) in the United States.

195.0 (77%) of adults have smartphones.

Walmart Pay can be used on any iOS or Android device and 95.5% (186.2mm) of smartphone users use and iOS or Android device.

24.8% of users with iOS or Android Phones have set up Walmart Pay and used it at least once in the past.

- 46.2 mm (23.7%) of 195.0 US adults with smartphones have tired Walmart Pay.

23.7% of all users that set up Walmart Pay, used it during the last transaction.

- 11.0 mm (5.9%) of 186.2vmm US adults that have an iOS or Android phone used Walmart Pay the last time they went to Walmart.

11.0 mm users represent 5.6% of US adults that have a smartphone.

Current Usage of Samsung Pay

There are 252.8 mm adults (18 years and older) in the United States.

195.0 (77%) of adults have smartphones.

Samsung Pay can only be used on Samsung devices device and 29.5% (57.5mm) of smartphone users use a Samsung device.

17.2% of users with a Samsung device have set up Samsung Pay and used it at least once in the past.

- 9.9 mm (5.1%) of 195.0 US adults with smartphones have tired Samsung Pay.

26.8% of all users that set up Samsung Pay, used it during the last transaction.

- 2.6 mm (4.6%) of 57.5 mm US adults that have a Samsung phone used Samsung Pay the last time they went to a store.

2.6 mm users represent 1.4% of US adults that have a smartphone.

13.3% of users with a Android device have set up Android Pay and used it at least once in the past.

- 13.4 mm (6.9%) of 195.0 US adults with smartphones have tired Android Pay.

17.3% of all users that set up Android Pay Pay, used it during the last transaction.

- 2.3 mm (2.3%) of 101.4 mm US adults that have a Samsung phone used Samsung Pay the last time they went to a store.

2.3 mm users represent 1.2% of US adults that have a smartphone.

Comparison of all Three Mobile Wallets

Walmart Pay has by far the greatest overall adoption of all Payment methods – almost double the second most popular choice.

Each Payment method is limited in its own way

- Apple Pay: Can only be used with iPhones and only in stores that accept Apple Pay.

- Walmart Pay: Can only be used in Walmart Locations.

- Samsung Pay: Can be used anywhere but only on Samsung devices.

- Android Pay: Only on Android devices and only in locations that accept Android Pay.
