Groupon Serves Breadcrumbs To Local Restaurants

Groupon is getting serious about entering the local commerce industry.

Four-and-a-half months after acquiring Breadcrumb, a point-of-sale iOS app creator catering to the hospitality community, the company has launched its app nationally today after a limited pilot in New York City.

Breadcrumb does what it can to replace the traditional cash register, instead offering a wide range of transaction and management features through an iPad and the Breadcrumb app. The app allows for bill split and merge, menu item adjustment, time clocks, real-time sales reports and more, all through the same program. As such, Breadcrumb is targeted especially at restaurants, bars and cafes.

As an added incentive to get companies to sign on, Breadcrumb offers a starting “Breadbasket” as well. According to the release, Breadbox contents are as follows: an iPad with stand, credit card swipe, printer, router, wireless access point, cables and cash drawer.

Unsurprisingly, Breadcrumb comes integrated with Groupon Payments, the daily deal company’s version of the swipe-and-dongle POS system we’re all so familiar with. The service launched in September and offers low rates on credit card transactions and overnight deposits.

Breadcrumb pricing starts at $99 a month, which includes installation and phone and email support for app-using retailers.
