Malware Attacked At Least 6 U.S. Retailers

BlackPOS, the point-of-sale (POS)-targeting malware implicated in the most recent data-breach attack, has been discovered attacking at least six other U.S. retailers.

While IntelCrawler, a cybersecurity firm, has not publicly named the companies, it identified them as retailers based in the United States, Reuters reported on Jan. 21.

Reuters spoke with Andrew Komarov, CEO of IntelCrawler, who disclosed the findings and said law-enforcement agencies had been informed. He specifically said that payment data were compromised, but the exact amount is unknown.

The retailers are located in California and New York, he said.

The malware known as BlackPOS has caused enormous controversy in the payments and retail industries. In a recent commentary, Market Platform Dynamics CEO Karen Webster pointed out that new developments were bound to emerge that would reveal more attacks.
