Merchants Offering Discounts and Support to Bed Bath & Beyond Customers

Merchants are working to gain business that used to go to Bed Bath & Beyond.

The retailer that declared bankruptcy this week had 35 million customers and a 33% share of registry listings in 2022, and those customers are now looking to shop elsewhere, ModernRetail reported Friday (April 28).

Now, as the retailer begins closing 360 Bed Bath & Beyond stores, 120 buybuy Baby locations and its website, sellers of home goods, baby items and registries are looking to pick up its customers, according to the report.

For example, The Container Store said Wednesday (April 26) that it is offering a discount through May 31 to customers who bring in “a competitor’s blue coupon,” the report said.

The retailer said in a press release that “considering recently announced retailer closings, The Container Store will offer a 20% discount off any single item through May 31, 2023, for customers who bring a competitor’s blue coupon to any store location.”

A day later, on Thursday (April 27), Big Lots said it is offering 20% off purchases of $50 or more through May 7 to anyone who brings in a Bed Bath & Beyond coupon, per the report.

“For anyone who has missed their last opportunity to redeem one of these coupons, Big Lots is opening our doors to help you save on your entire purchase,” Big Lots President and CEO Bruce Thorn said in a press release.

In addition, registry company Babylist is helping Bed Bath & Beyond customers move their baby registries from to its own platform. It has set up a dedicated email portal to help new users shift their registry and is offering them a $10 credit for doing so through May 10, according to the report.

“Any buybuy Baby registry can easily be transferred to Babylist with just a few clicks,” the firm said in a Wednesday post on its website.

Bed Bath & Beyond declared bankruptcy Sunday (April 23) after months warning about its future and after failing to secure funding that would have allowed it to stay afloat.

The company had said in January that bankruptcy was being considered.
