Barclays US, Priceline Launch Card That Earns Points on Redeemed Points

Aiming to help customers earn and use rewards more quickly, co-branded credit card issuer and financial services partner Barclays US Consumer Bank and online travel firm Priceline have introduced a feature that allows cardmembers to earn points even when redeeming points.

With this new PricePoints features, Priceline VIP Rewards Visa Card users earn points on the dollar value of the points redeemed, according to a Thursday (Sept. 15) press release.

“Priceline strives to use innovation to make the best deals available to customers,” Priceline Senior Director of Ancillary Products Denise Bialek said in the release. “With PricePoints, we are bringing this vision to life through a game-changing credit card program that allows travelers to earn 5x points on all Priceline travel, even when redeeming points at the time of booking.”

In practice, cardmembers who are redeeming points will be charged for the full amount at the time of booking — earning points for both the dollars spent and the dollar value of the points redeemed — and then will receive a statement credit for the value of the points within five business days, according to the press release.

“PricePoints is designed to make the redemption process more rewarding and easier for our Priceline VIP Rewards Visa Cardmembers, enabling them to turn today’s trip into tomorrow’s travel,” Barclays Head of U.S. Cards and Partnerships Bob Highland said in the release. “We believe this is a powerful concept that will resonate strongly with consumers who are seeking easy, economical and faster ways to travel and relax.”

This announcement comes about a month after the news that Citi will be debuting a new portal, Citi Travel, with Booking.com to help customers plan and book their trips.
