$93 Million Disappears Down Under In 2012

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) latest Targeting Scams Report for 2012 noted a 65 percent increase in online shopping scams in Australia. The figures show that consumers in this Pacific nation lost $93 million to illegal activity during this time period.

“The average amount that people are losing is somewhere between about $100 and $500 – not insignificant amounts,” Deila Rickard, the ACCC’s deputy chair, told ABC. “About 32 percent of people who lost money, lost in the range of that.”

However, not all online shopping scams took place online. The researchers found that more than half of all scams took place through voice or text message.
