China UnionPay Heads Down Under Through Commonwealth Partnership

In a move that may benefit business travelers, students and the roughly 700,000 China UnionPay customers that frequent Australia every year, the payments network announced on Wednesday that it will be expanding to Australia with the help of Commonwealth Bank, The Paypers reports.

According to the media outlet, the Australian financial services provider will begin accepting UnionPay cards in July of this year. Further, Commonwealth Bank network ATMs are now enabled to accept these cards for transactions.

The move was made possible by the end of UnionPay’s exclusive, five-year agreement with National Australia Bank last year, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.
