At Fortune’s Brainstorm Conference in Aspen, eBay CEO John Donahoe yesterday indicated that he’d “love” to acquire Airbnb, but that eBay can’t afford the company.
Donahoe also praised Airbnb as “the next eBay” and “one of the more successful startups of this generation,” as TechCrunch noted. The source also indicates that Donahoe and Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky have been “informally advising each other for a few years,” and that they were introduced to each other by Marc Andreessen.
Airbnb was most recently valued at $2.5 billion, while eBay has $11.7 billion in cash or cash equivalents, per their latest earnings release.
