The Glasgow City Council has been fined £150,000 by the Information Commissioner’s office for losing two unencrypted laptops, reported Finextra. One of the two laptops included personal information belonging to 20,143 people, and over 6,000 bank account details.
Three years ago the council was issued a notice because it lost an unencrypted memory stick that contained personal data. The laptops were stolen back in May 2012. One laptop was reported to be locked away in a storage unit, and the other was placed in an unlocked drawer along with the key to open the storage.
The laptop containing account details also held the council’s creditor payment history file. The laptops have not been recovered and there are no other records of the information that was stored onto them.
