Groupon Unveils, Withdraws Mobile POS App

On Monday, Groupon released and then abruptly withdrew Groupon POS, an iPad-specific mobile payment tool that was allegedly aimed at local merchants.

The discovery of the app generated widespread interest among media outlets as the introduction was not prefaced by a press release. However, as suddenly as it appeared in the U.S. and international Apple app stores, the app was gone.

According to AppAdvice, the offering disappeared from the store shortly after the release, meaning that the availability of the app – which had been touted as a way to help the company better compete with other payment services like Square and PayPal – is now uncertain.

Prior to the announcement that it had been pulled back 9to5Mac described Groupon POS as “a scaled back version of the Breadcrumb POS app that the company acquired last year,” one advertised as best suited “for a wide variety of merchants from cafes and delis, to salons, spas and florists.”

As of now, it remains unclear to observers whether Groupon POS will be available soon or whether its release was accidental.
