Study: Data Breaches Lead To 50 Percent Of U.S. Consumer Fraud Cases

Data breaches led to over 50 percent of all U.S. consumer fraud victims in 2012, according to a Javelin Strategy & Research report.

The Open Security Foundation reported that an all-time high of 1,611 breaches occurred in 2012, representing a 48 percent increase over 2011, as Finextra noted.

The study notes that fraud losses of $5.2 billion came from the breach involving the South Carolina Department of Revenue alone.
