UK Post Office Leads Europe In Contactless Payments

British Post Offices have put their stamp on history as they’ve announced the installment of contactless payments terminals in over 30,000 counter positions across 11,500 UK branches.

According to Finextra, the Post Office’s new technology serves over 20 million individuals a week, and the installment has established them as the largest acceptor of contactless payments in Europe.

The Post Office has installed contactless payments readers because they are ideal for reducing the long lines that are often found in branches, and are helping to facilitate low-value payment transactions for the consumers and merchants.

The Post Office has been making its biggest transformation in history.  In addition to the contactless payments introduction, they have announced plans to install new branch openings, improved automation systems and extended hours of operations to enhance customer service.

Nick Kennett, director of financial services at the Post Office stated, “We are delighted that through installing these new contactless payment terminals across our entire network we can improve access to our services by making it as easy as possible for customers to do business with us. These contactless terminals are part of our investment program to improve customer service and reduce transaction times.”

Customers in the UK can use contactless cards and NFC-registered mobile phones to pay for transactions under £20. They can quickly make payments by simply tapping the mobile phone or card against the reader.

“The Post Office network is bigger than all the banks combined, with over 11,500 branches. As the largest provider of contactless payment terminals in Europe, we are please to be leading the way in bringing this technology to the 20 million customers which visit our branches each week,” Kennett added.
