Barriers, Competition Defined PayPal’s Early Days

Speaking at the ReadWrite Mix event, PayPal President David Marcus spoke at length about the history of the company and some of the challenges it faced as it expanded globally.

One of the major problems was dealing with country-by-country financial and payments regulations, many of which differ from place to place. Keeping back the efforts of competitors and maintaining a stable supply of resources were pivotal in keeping PayPal solvent, let alone successful.

“You can not win over a sustained period of time if you go against what your customers want to do. If you do things your customers hate, you can’t win over the long term,” Marcus said.
