Study: Smartphone Sales Leapt Past Regular Phones In 2013

For the first time, smartphone sales worldwide exceeded those for regular phone devices last year, according to new research from Gartner.

Out of the 1.8 billion phones sold in 2013, 968 million of them were smartphones. This represents a 3.5 percent increase from 2012 levels, TechCrunch reported on Feb. 13.

Gartner cited emerging markets as a key driver of smartphone growth worldwide. Mature smartphone markets in developed economies saw slight declines in 2013. According to Gartner, Android increased its market share to 78.4 percent last year from 66.4 percent in 2012. The share for Apple’s iOS tumbled from 19.1 percent to 15.6 percent.
