Following in the footsteps of the New York Metropolitan Transit Authority and the Chicago Transit Authority, Washington Metro is preparing to launch a system that will accept contactless bankcards for fare payment.
The transit agency has awarded Accenture a $184 million contract to develop and deploy a turnstile system that will allow integration with EMV-based chip cards and NFC-enabled smartphones, Finextra reported on Jan. 14.
“The new technology will provide more flexibility for accounts, better reliability for riders, and real choices for customers to use bank-issued payment cards, credit cards, ID cards, or mobile phones to pay their Metro fares,” Richard Sarles, Washington Metro, CEO and general manager, said in a statement.
