Google Glass is back, but this time no skydivers came down bearing it.
A new curved rectangle version of the Glass with a “button-and-hinge system” that can be used with different glasses is being discreetly distributed to businesses in the manufacturing, energy and health care industries, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The business-focused version has been designed for use in private workspaces. For instance, in health care, surgeons used it during procedures to get advice from their colleagues or for instructing medical students. Similarly in manufacturing, it was used by field workers to test sophisticated machinery with support from remotely located workers.
Learning from the feedback for the Explorer version of the Glass, Google has packed the new version with a much stronger battery that can keep it running for up to two hours, a faster Intel processor and better wireless connectivity, sources told WSJ.
The new version also has a thinner and longer cube-like glass prism, which projects the display into the eye’s field of vision, with vertical and horizontal adjustments, unlike the Explorer model that only supported horizontal adjustment.
As Google works on developing a user-friendly version that it plans to launch in fall this year, the company is working hard to put behind the marketing catastrophe and consumer backlash the bug-ridden $1,500 device caused with its film-anywhere-discreetly feature.
All new developments on the new enterprise edition and the consumer-centric model are strictly being kept under wraps, as Google-owned Nest’s CEO Tony Fadell likes it, WSJ reported. Fadell is currently heading the development of the two models.
Until late 2014, the company reportedly planned to launch the new version in stores for which it bought and leased real estate locations in many cities. However, by December, the plan was scrapped as the Glass team was moved from the Google X research lab into the Nest division.
