Macy’s The Latest To Tell Trump ‘You’re Fired!’

Macy’s is ending an 11-year relationship with Donald Trump, stating on Wednesday (July 1) that it will no longer sell his menswear or ties. The department store giant made the announcement in the wake of Trump’s remarks earlier this week during a speech that Mexican immigrants are “rapists.”

Trump made the remarks during his declaration that he is running for president.

“We are disappointed and distressed by recent remarks about immigrants from Mexico,” Macy’s said in a statement announcing the end of the business relationship. “We do not believe the disparaging characterizations portray an accurate picture of the many Mexicans, Mexican Americans and Latinos who have made so many valuable contributions to the success of our nation.”

The Macy’s announcement came days after NBC Universal also severed its ties with Trump, stating that it will no longer air the Miss USA and Miss Universe beauty pageants.

Firing back at both Macy’s and NBC, Trump said they “totally caved at the first sight of potential difficulty with special interest groups who are nothing more than professional agitators, who are not looking out for the people they purport to represent, but only for themselves.” Trump also said that it was his decision to end his deal with Macy’s.

The eponymous Trump items sold in Macy’s include ties, accessories, dress shirts and blazers.

As noted by The Washington Post Wednesday (July 1), Macy’s has been making efforts to gain inroads with Latino shoppers. The company has recently debuted a private-label Thalia Sodi line in tandem with the Latina musician and aimed at Latina consumers.

The Macy’s termination came amid a groundswell of online activity calling for an end to Macy’s ties to the controversial billionaire. Moveon.org started a petition exhorting the removal of Trump items from the stores that had garnered more than 728,000 signatures by Wednesday.
