In addition to the founding members, the AI Energy Management Alliance (AEMA) will include partners from across the computing and power ecosystem, including AI platforms, infrastructure providers, data center operators, technology companies, power producers, utilities and regional grid operators, according to the post.
Emerald AI said in a Wednesday post on LinkedIn that 18 launch partners are participating in AEMA alongside the three founders.
“What we agree on is specific: The grid was built for flat, predictable load, AI is not that, and the answer is not to ask the grid to simply absorb us,” Emerald AI said in the post. “AI data centers should be good grid citizens—flexing when the system is strained, absorbing power when it is abundant, and that flexibility should earn a faster connection through rules that are performance-based and the same for everyone.”
Tyler Norris, head of energy market innovation, AI and infrastructure at Google and inaugural board chair of AEMA, said in a Wednesday post on LinkedIn about AEMA: “Our shared mission: modernize power system planning and operations for the 21st century to unlock the full potential of flexible data centers, enabling digital infrastructure to actively enhance system utilization, affordability and reliability.”

According to Nvidia’s blog post, AEMA will promote the responsible scaling of AI factories by developing technical and operational approaches, collaborating with utilities on interconnection solutions and advocating for policies that recognize grid-responsive demand.
Flexible AI data centers can dynamically manage their electricity use in response to grid conditions, getting more watts out of existing infrastructure, reducing environmental impacts per watt and supporting energy affordability, the post said.
These data centers adjust the amount of electricity they draw from the grid by shifting computing workloads, discharging storage, using paired generation or responding to system contingencies, according to the post.
AEMA is technology-neutral and performance-based, focusing on the measurable service a facility can deliver rather than the hardware or software that is used, the post said.
The alliance aims to set rules for facilities regarding staying connected during brief grid disturbances, reducing power use when needed and responding to emergencies; standardize technical requirements, performance metrics and operational data sharing; create faster, risk-adjusted pathways for customers that make credible and verifiable flexibility commitments; and allocate interconnection costs in a way that reflects actual system impacts and benefits, per the post.
