The new infrastructure, which was built with Nvidia, will support visual search, content understanding, safety systems and other products that rely on both images and language, according to the release.

In benchmark testing, the infrastructure delivered 85 times faster response startup and 7.3 times faster overall latency by using precomputed visual representations instead of repeatedly processing raw images, the release said.

“Building the next generation of AI-powered discovery means investing in infrastructure that can keep up with the scale and complexity of Pinterest,” Kartik Paramasivam, chief architect at Pinterest, said in the release. “Our collaboration with Nvidia helps us deliver faster, smarter and more personalized experiences for the hundreds of millions of people who use Pinterest.”

Pinterest’s new multimodal AI infrastructure combines the company’s own visual embeddings with the Nvidia accelerated computing platform, which includes Nvidia Blackwell GPUs and Nvidia Dynamo, according to the release.

This combination enables Pinterest to turn more than 80 billion monthly searches into high-value signals for AI-powered discovery and shopping, allowing Pinterest Assistant to run 25 times more visual context per request, the release said.

The work on this project builds on nearly five years of collaboration between Pinterest and Nvidia, per the release.

“Pinterest is transforming visual discovery with AI, helping hundreds of millions of people find inspiration through more intelligent and personalized experiences,” Ujval Kapasi, vice president, AI & HPC Frameworks and Libraries at Nvidia, said in the release. “By building its multimodal AI infrastructure on Nvidia accelerated computing and software, Pinterest can bring the next generation of visual and conversational AI experiences to its users at scale.”

PYMNTS reported Aug. 4 that Pinterest’s second quarter results suggested that the company is seeing results from its effort to reinvent itself as an AI-driven shopping destination.

Pinterest’s revenue topped $1 billion for the fourth straight quarter, and its monthly active users hit a record high.

Every pin a user sees now runs through a recommendation model trained on that user’s saves, searches and boards, Pinterest CEO Bill Ready said at the time.

PYMNTS reported Tuesday (Sept. 8) that Pinterest is powered by one of the most complex AI systems in social media.
