Visa’s NFC Super Bowl

Visa's digital side is ready to make another Super Bowl appearance.

As part of a new partnership with the NFL, Visa has made a deal to provide the roughly 700 NFC-enabled POS terminals for cardholders who want to use their smartphone to swipe, tap or click-to-pay. Visa Checkout users will have the chance to have drinks delivered directly to them via the Super Bowl 50 app, while using smartphone payments via services like Apple Pay, Android Pay and Samsung Pay, among others.

“We were thrilled to be the first team Visa sponsored after their NFL renewal last year,” said Al Guido, COO of the San Fransisco 49ers. “We designed Levi’s Stadium to be a forward-looking venue that was continually adaptable to advances in technology.”

Fans can also use and test mobile payments at the NFL Shop at the Moscone Center near the stadium. At that location, Visa cardholders can see how to use Samsung Pay. Visa will also offer two promotions for those who want to use the app toward purchases at the shop. Attendees who load a Visa card on Samsung Pay or show that a Visa card is already loaded on their smartphone will receive a $5 coupon. Customers will receive an additional $5 coupon for participating in the demo.

“Our efforts will culminate with Super Bowl 50, which will represent our most advanced payment environment to date,” said Brian Rolapp, the NFL's executive VP of media.

Last year, Visa Checkout also made an appearance at the event. The Super Bowl acted as a very public coming out party for Visa Checkout.
