Adyen Goes In-Store With Two New POS Terminals

Amsterdam-based global payments company Adyen has launched two point-of-sale (POS) terminals — the NYC1 and AMS1.

The new devices are both mobile and lightweight and can accept in-person payments for enterprise and platform businesses, according to an announcement on the Adyen website.

The NYC1 is meant for “businesses that have already invested in hardware like phones or tablets and want to add payments to their set-up,” according to a press release. Businesses can offer customized payment flow in their own POS app using the device.

The AMS1 is meant for “enterprise and platform businesses that want to be able to access all operational apps via one device,” the release stated. Businesses can accept payments and run their own business application on this all-in-one terminal, which has an Android operating system.

The launch marks Adyen’s first foray into hardware design. The firm worked closely with some of its largest customers to design the devices, according to the website announcement.

“We designed two devices that would seamlessly fit into their payments journeys,” Adyen said in the announcement. “Their brief to us was simple: terminals that support mobile customer journeys, at an affordable cost, with a powerful battery.”

“Adyen’s commitment is to help businesses realize their ambitions faster, and creating our own terminals is the latest way we’re delivering on this promise,” said Adyen Chief Operating Officer Kamran Zaki in the release. “We always innovate based on customer feedback to deliver superior experiences with speed and flexibility. With our in-person payments offering, businesses have a full suite of terminals to choose from, enabling them to pick the best one to meet their specific needs.”

In addition to its dedicated POS machines, Adyen is involved in the ongoing rollout of Tap to Pay on iPhone, which allows businesses to use iPhones to accept contactless payments without the need to purchase or manage additional hardware.
