Disney’s New Coloring App Is For Adults

For a while now, coloring books haven’t been just for kids. They’ve been popping up in book stores, at airport shops and even on The New York Times bestseller list. And studies show there are neurological benefits to coloring, as it calms nerves and works with alpha and beta brain waves.

The happiest place on Earth seems to have gotten on that wave as well, in a digital sense. And it’s focused on grownups, not kids.

Disney has rolled out its Color by Disney mobile app — that has a subscription service model — that allows the artistically inspired to try their hand at a slew of Disney character templates. From characters and scenes to logos and other Disney and Pixar artwork, there are hundreds of outlines images to color within — and out of — the lines. The artist can pick from a variety of characters, such as those from Frozen or Moana, more iconic Pixar characters like Woody from Toy Story, and true classics like Snow White, from her namesake movie.

The app is being touted and advertised to grownups as a way to destress. There are studies out there, some reliable, some so-so. But the popularity of coloring book apps has gone up as the App Store has locked in a bunch that includes Recolor, Pigment, Colorfy and Heycolor, to name a few.

Ready to get artsy and needing to relax? After downloading (and paying), just open the app, pick the image template, choose the stylist type (choices include pencil, crayon, brush and others) and then, just as you do in real life, start picking those colors and shading in the sections. When your drawing is complete, feel free to share on social media or save to print out and post on the fridge.

Plans for templates start at $2.99 for one week and climb up to $39.99 for a year’s worth of access.

Oh, and for those who get super color-happy, more templates roll out on a weekly basis.
