Nordstrom Faces More Brick-And-Mortar Closures

Nordstrom Faces More Brick-And-Mortar Closures

While Nordstrom is planning to open two full-line locations this year, the fashion retailer intends to close two locations at the beginning of April. The stores slated for closure include one at The Mall at Wellington Green in Florida and another at Virginia’s MacArthur Center, according to reports.

The outlet reported that the retailer has shuttered roughly two locations each year in recent times. In particular, Nordstrom is said to leave underperforming malls, or locations that are near other, higher-performing Nordstrom stores. For instance, the retailer had said that it planned to shutter a store in the under-performing Providence Place mall in January. Another one of its locations, which is located in the area of Boston, is just 45 minutes away.

At the beginning of 2015, the retailer also shuttered two of its five locations in the area of Portland, Oregon. In addition, Nordstrom closed two stores in Southern California in the middle of 2016 and the beginning of 2017. Additionally, the retailer closed a Salem, Oregon store at the beginning of 2018 and a Washington, D.C.-area store in the middle of 2017.

The news comes as Nordstrom was gearing up to open its inaugural full-line store in the midtown area of New York City to attract fashion-conscious customers and those who are on their lunch breaks. It was set to stock men’s clothing along with shoes and grooming, Nordstrom Co-President Peter Nordstrom told The New York Times in April. The store would feature both shoe shiners, on-staff tailors and digital screens to show custom-made jackets on shoppers’ avatars. In addition, shoppers would be able to make returns via digital kiosks without the need to interact with a staff member. Inventory would range from Vans sneakers priced at around $50 to Samuelsohn suits starting at around $1,000.
