Coupon App Ranking Reveals Consumer’s Discount Priorities

A couple of years back, before the COVID craziness, PYMNTS wrote that “In 1887, Asa Candler, the founder of the Coca-Cola Company, had a novel idea: He decided to give away some of his product for free. And so, he wrote tickets for consumers to try a glass of ice cold Coke.”

With that, modern couponing was born. Over 130 years after Candler’s gambit, it’s become a mainstay of retailing. PYMNTS latest Provider Ranking of Coupon Apps tracks the couponing journey into the mobile and digital realms, where there is an oddly comforting sense of stability as leading apps hold their ground and contenders strut their stuff, all in pursuit of savings.

The Top 5

Coming in at No. 1 again is Ibotta, which got a big cash injection last summer from Koch Disruptive Technologies. Online marketplace Groupon holds steady at No. 2 as its proposition resonates with consumers, as does that of prescription discount app GoodRX, which rises one spot to enter the top 3. Down one spot at No. 4 is deal app Flipp, with PayPal’s Honey discount search app finishing out the top 5 at No. 5.

The Top 10

Looking now to the bottom half of our Top 10, the GasBuddy real-time fuel discount app keeps its No. 6 parking space for another month, as does cash back rewards app Rakuten at No. 7.

One changeup is coupon aggregator app RetailMeNot climbing one spot to No. 8, followed by shopping activities reward app Shopkick also rising one spot to grab No. 9. Closing out this edition of PYMNTS Provider Ranking of Coupon Apps is savings app Coupons.com at No. 10.
