The Home Depot has signed a deal with Walmart to utilize the box store giant’s GoLocal service for same-day or next-day delivery on many of its home improvement products.

Walmart GoLocal was launched in August as a white-label, last-mile delivery service to help other retailers’ meet their customers’ delivery demands. The Home Depot is the platform’s first retail client.

“The Home Depot is continuously working to give customers the most convenient shopping experience in home improvement, and that includes providing a wide range of fast and reliable delivery options,” said Stephanie Smith, senior vice president of supply chain for The Home Depot, in the announcement.

“This partnership brings us even closer to our goal of offering same-day or next-day delivery to 90 percent of the U.S. population,” Smith added.

The Home Depot will offer same-day or next-day delivery of tools, fasteners, paint and other supplies that fit in the car with Walmart GoLocal in a handful of markets in the next few weeks, and the company plans to expand to multiple markets across the country by the end of the year.

“We’re honored to work with The Home Depot in our shared goal of making fast and reliable local delivery available in every community we serve, including rural and suburban areas, where we both have a strong retail presence,” John Furner, president and CEO of Walmart U.S., said in the announcement.

The Home Depot digital sales went up 86% in fiscal 2020, with more than half of those online orders fulfilled through stores.

Walmart has been working to develop and grow its “commerce capabilities” to meet the needs of its 4,700-plus stores nationwide, Furner said when launching Walmart GoLocal, and wanted to offer that same ability to other companies too.

In the last three years, the retail giant’s delivery service brought more than 160,000 products to the doorsteps of some 70% of the population across the country from more than 3,000 Walmart stores.
