It’s a good morning for hackers – not so great for fans of cybersecurity. It seems that apart from the big hotel breach that sent tends of thousands of payment transactions – complete with card numbers, customer names and security codes – to the dark web, the business software firm Sage has been hit by a data breach.
Sage Group is reporting that the personal detail of about 280 British employees has been exposed through a data breach made possible by the unauthorized access to its systems through the use of an internal login.
Translation – someone got hold of a password they shouldn’t have had, and got into Sage’s systems.
“We are investigating unauthorized access to customer information using an internal login,” the company said in a statement. “We cannot comment further whilst we work with the authorities to investigate, but our customers remain our first priority and we are speaking directly with those affected.”
Sage is one of the U.K’s largest tech firms, creating software designed to manage accounting, payroll and payments for businesses. According to its internal data, the firm serves 6 million SMBs worldwide. As of last month, it was predicting revenue increases in the 6 percent range for the fiscal year ending next month – continuing apace with recent growth from the first half of the year, which was in the 6.2 percent range. That puts Sage’s revenue as of March 31st at $966 million. Operating profit was up 1.9 percent.
