Microsoft announced in a blog post on Tuesday (Aug. 10) that it has acquired Peer5 to enhance the company’s enterprise video-streaming capabilities at a time when live video has become increasingly important, as workers are still slow to return to their offices and travel like they did pre-pandemic.
“As livestreaming becomes more common in the workplace, large organizations need reliable enterprise video streaming solutions. Enterprise Content Delivery Networks (eCDNs) can alleviate limited corporate network downlink bandwidth to deliver high-quality video streaming and broadcasting for large audiences of employees,” wrote Nicole Herskowitz, GM at Microsoft, in the blog.
Microsoft Teams customers have repeatedly asked for enhanced eCDN capabilities for large-scale meetings and virtual events now that the collaboration platform is even more crucial to business success today, she wrote.
Peer5 features a WebRTC-based eCDN solution that runs in-browser to optimize bandwidth use and to lessen overall impacts on the company network. The Peer5 mesh networks self-balance and scale as the number of viewers increases, with no additional installation or user endpoints needed.

The Peer5 deal is the third high-profile acquisition by Microsoft in the past several weeks, with the company also expanding its cybersecurity prowess with a couple of deals last month. The tech giant acquired CloudKnox Security on July 21 and threat intelligence experts RiskIQ at the beginning of July. Microsoft said cybersecurity is increasingly important these days, as IT modernization is often done across several clouds or hybrid cloud environments, which is why they targeted CloudKnox.
RiskIQ searches the web and provides details on websites, networks, domain names and more to offer customers a more complete picture of what can be accessed outside of company firewalls, helping them to determine what should be locked down and better protected from security breaches.
