Walmart Mexico Plans to Double Its 2 Million Mobile Phone Users in 2022

Walmart’s Mexico unit is looking at doubling the number of people connected to its mobile phone service this year, Reuters reported Tuesday (March 15).

The service is called BAIT or Bodega Aurrera Internet y Telefonia, and it reportedly services over 2 million residents of the country.

“We now represent nearly 2% of total mobile telephone lines in Mexico since we launched the service less than two years ago,” said Chief Growth Officer Beatriz Nunez.

In addition, Walmart is angling for a full fleet of electric delivery vehicles by 2027.

PYMNTS wrote that Walmart has announced other improvements as of late, including Walmart Global Tech’s announcement that it plans to hire upward of 5,000 associates globally this fiscal year, along with adding hubs in Toronto and Atlanta.

Global Tech is the fastest growing corporate team at the retail giant, with Suresh Kumar, executive vice president, chief technology officer and chief development officer, Walmart Inc., saying the group is charged with developing and managing the foundational technologies on which customer experiences are built.

That comes with managing cloud, data, enterprise architecture, DevOps, infrastructure and security.

Global Tech has more than 20,000 associates around the world and wants to add cybersecurity professionals, architects, developers, software engineers, data scientists, data engineers, technical program managers and product managers.

They also want to add more jobs in Toronto, including 45 full-time associates including software developers, product managers and technical program managers.

The company’s Atlanta hub also wants to add employees in software engineering, AI, machine learning and data science.

The company has recently opened its application period for its ninth annual Open Call event, which works on driving products and innovation for Walmart, which is looking to add more merchants to its market.

Global Tech reportedly has 16 hubs including in Silicon Valley and Northwest Arkansas, along with Dallas and India, with plans to add more in the future.
