Walmart will be making it less expensive for customers to send money to Mexico, a press release said.

Customers will now be able to send money from any of the retailer’s stores in the U.S. to any in Mexico, for around $2.50 per transaction, on the Walmart2Walmart money transfer program.

The low fee is part of Walmart’s goal of offering affordable financial solutions, the press release noted.

It will add to the Walmart2Walmart service offered since 2016, which was paused in 2018 but is back in service now.

Remittances to Mexico are up 27% compared to 2021, the release said.

Said Julia Unger, vice president, Walmart Financial Services, “Our low-fee strategy demonstrates our commitment to continue improving the financial well-being of our customers around the world.”

PYMNTS also wrote recently about Walmart’s upgrades to its eCommerce and home delivery options, such as more automated fulfillment centers attached to existing stores.

It will also be using its own workers to make deliveries, and expand a service so staffers will be able to leave packages inside homes.

“When customers realize they need an item, do they think of Walmart first?” asked Tom Ward, a longtime Walmart executive who was recently named the head of its U.S. eCommerce operations, per a Wall Street Journal report. “The reason they do or they should is we built these things.”

Reports said Walmart was attempting to keep abreast of new, digital-focused rivals like Amazon and even newer startups, which have been innovating in the eCommerce sector.

Ecommerce grew rapidly during the pandemic as shoppers turned to their phones due to the danger of COVID-19.
