Klarna and OpenAI to Use ChatGPT as Shopping Assistant

Klarna is working with OpenAI to use ChatGPT as a personal shopping assistant.

The Klarna integrated plug-in Plugin for ChatGPT will enable users to ask the platform for shopping advice and receive product recommendations along with links to shop those products, Klarna said in a Thursday (March 23) press release.

“I’m super excited about our plugin with ChatGPT because it passes my ‘north star’ criteria that I call my ‘mom test,’ i.e., would my mom understand and benefit from this,” Klarna Co-Founder and CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski said in the release. “And it does because it’s easy to use and genuinely solves a ton of problems — it drives tremendous value for everyone.”

In practice, consumers will install the plugin, ask ChatGPT for shopping ideas, receive product recommendations, and if necessary, provide further prompts to receive additional recommendations, according to the press release.

They can then tap on a link that takes them to a product page on Klarna’s search and compare tool, the release said.

The plugin will initially be available to ChatGPT Plus subscribers in the United States and Canada and will then gradually be extended to more users and regions, according to the release.

“Klarna is in a unique position to leverage the best technology and data to help people discover new products and solve problems for consumers at every stage of the shopping journey, and we’ll continue innovating to bring these services to our 150 million customers,” Siemiatkowski said in the release.

As PYMNTS reported March 15, OpenAI brought its ChatGPT system to proverbial life about four months ago, and evangelists believe the consumer-facing artificial intelligence (AI) tool has changed the world forever.

Its intuitive, chat-based interface allows users to interact with the ever-growing language model OpenAI is building and push the boundaries of the dataset it is being trained on.

The announcement of the new plugin comes about a week after OpenAI and Stripe announced that they are collaborating on some projects.

OpenAI will use Stripe’s financial infrastructure platform to monetize its products, while Stripe will incorporate OpenAI’s generative AI technology into its products and services, the companies said March 15.
