Klarna and Clarity AI have teamed up to provide environmental impact information to consumers who have purchased electronics.
Clarity AI’s global sustainability tech platform and Klarna’s payments technology and shopping service will work together to show “conscious badges” to consumers who have made an electronics purchase using the Klarna app, the companies said in a Thursday (March 16) press release.
The companies plan to also make the badges visible to all consumers — whether or not they have made a purchase — through Klarna’s CO2e tracker, according to the release.
“We’re thrilled to deepen our partnership with Klarna to develop conscious badges, the first-ever assessment of electronics brands’ achievements providing transparency at scale for consumers around the world,” Clarity AI Board Director and Head of Product Ángel Agudo said in the release. “We believe there should be nothing ‘black-box’ about metrics, and we’re excited Klarna can leverage our [artificial intelligence (AI)] capabilities to provide detailed information for Klarna shoppers who want to know more.”
As PYMNTS reported in January, sustainability initiatives have been reshaping the retail industry.
The demand for information about sustainability initiatives has been such that the National Retail Federation (NRF) recently launched a guide that helps retailers clarify and prioritize their responses to climate change.
“Given growing interest from investors, regulators, supply chain partners, employees and consumers seeking to understand how retailers are responding to climate change, contributors to the guide see value in providing clarity around terms and approaches,” NRF said Jan. 10 when announcing the release of its “Retailers Reaching for Net-Zero” guide.
With the new collaboration, the Klarna app will display five badges that electronics brands can earn by lowering direct greenhouse gas emissions, lowering indirect greenhouse gas emissions, committing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, disclosing greenhouse gas emissions and using renewable energy, according to the press release.
The introduction of these badges follows last year’s addition of Conscious Collections to the Klarna app. This feature provides shoppers with information about the sustainability performance of fashion and footwear brands, the release said.
“The rollout of conscious badges in the Klarna App marks a significant milestone in our continued effort to empower shoppers to vote with their wallets,” Salah Said, Klarna head of sustainability, said in the release.
