EMR Specialist Drchrono Integrates With Square for Payments

Drchrono is a 2009 startup that has raised slightly more than $4 million in funding to date. Its description on CrunchBase is simple: “Bringing iPads to Healthcare.”

The services it already delivered to doctors prior to this month made up a pretty long list: create and store electronic health records (EHR), manage an appointment schedule, send prescriptions to pharmacies electronically. But at the start of June, Drchrono’s developers added two huge features to the platform. The first: Drchrono now lets doctors check patient health insurance eligibility in real time, using the iPad.

The second: doctors can now accept payment using Square mobile card readers. This service is aimed at medical practices with between one and ten doctors, TechCrunch says — a category that makes up 80 percent of the U.S. health care market.

To date, 23,000 doctors have registered to use Drchrono services, up from 5,000 a year ago.
