Attacks Plague More Bitcoin Exchanges

Another major Bitcoin exchange reportedly has suspended withdrawals, citing an extended distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack.

Bitstamp, an exchange headquartered in Slovenia, announced the suspension after irregularities were discovered in the site’s wallet system, Coindesk reported on Feb. 11.

Andreas Antonopoulos, chief security officer for Blockchain.info, a major public ledger for Bitcoin, told Coindesk the DDoS attack has sparked fears in the community and resulted in a broad sell-off.

“As transactions are being created, malformed/parallel transactions are also being created so as to create a fog of confusion over the entire network, which then affects almost every single implementation out there,” he explained.

A similar problem has dogged Mt. Gox, once the world’s biggest Bitcoin exchanges, since it was forced to suspend withdrawals last week.
