eSUB Raises $5 Million, Plans To Expand App Offerings

Cloud-based project management app startup eSUB Construction Software recently announced that it has raised $5 million in a Series A venture capital funding round led by Revolution Ventures. The San Diego-based startup was founded in 2008 and produces apps that help subcontractors track their work and compensation for the construction jobs they perform.

Wendy Rogers, president and CEO of eSub, was quoted as saying: “There’s a saying that subcontractors get paid for the work they report, not the work they do. And most people outside of the industry don’t realize this, but it’s subcontractors who do about 99 percent of the work in construction, not general contractors.”

Prior to starting eSUB Construction Software, Rogers reportedly managed a consultancy, representing and advocating for subcontractors in the U.S. construction market. After witnessing frequent disputes over compensation, said TechCrunch, she was inspired to found eSUB back in 2008.

Bobby Ocampo, an investor with Revolution Ventures, was quoted as saying: “Incumbent software providers in construction and real estate, like Procore, are serving the high end of the market. But the people out doing the work in the field, the subcontractors, have such different workflows and concerns. A vast majority of people working on the subcontractor side are not used to enterprise software, so you have to have a product that’s very easy to use, especially on mobile.”

With the new round of funding, eSUB reportedly intends to expand its native mobile app offerings with open APIs as a means to help foremen, project superintendents, supervisors and other field workers in the construction industry. Additionally, the company also plans to expand to 100 employees over the next year, up from 50 currently.
