The breach exposed people’s name, date of birth, sex, race, Social Security number and information about their military service, according to the report.
The breach affects about 2.8 million living people and 300,000 dead ones, the report said, citing reports from CNN and Federal News Network.
The Department of Defense said it has no indication that the information has been misused, per the report.

According to the CNN report, the DMDC said in a letter to victims of the breach: “We are taking appropriate actions to assess and enhance the cybersecurity posture of the DMDC system.”
According to the Federal New Network report, a Pentagon official said a “small number of unauthorized users” had access to the data during the time it was exposed.
These reports came about a week after Reuters reported that a trove of data allegedly stolen from the FBI includes detailed information about employees working on sensitive intelligence, counterespionage and security operations.
The data includes a 5,000-line spreadsheet containing names, addresses, telephone numbers, data of birth, Social Security numbers and emergency contact information for thousands of current and former FBI employees. It also identified assignments to specific FBI field offices and, in some cases, sensitive units, according to the report.
In another, separate incident, Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., said in a July 1 press release that he called on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) to look into a breach of a DHS information-sharing network.
That network, the Homeland Security Information Network (HSIN), is used by federal, state, local, tribal, territorial law enforcement and private sector partners to share intelligence, collaborate on events and respond to incidents.
“DHS and DOJ must thoroughly investigate who breached HSIN, what the attackers accessed, and ensure all DHS partners are provided with timely information and the tools necessary to mitigate any associated risks from the breach,” Warner said in the release.
