Akimbo Lands $850,000 Investment To Revamp Prepaid For mCommerce

Lauded as a virtual bank account that incorporates upgrades for mobile and social shoppers, Akimbo is attempting to stand out from the mobile wallet pack by offering a fee-free platform – and it now has $850,000 more in angel funding to do so.

The investment round, led by Rackspace co-founder Graham Weston and Akimbo co-founder Tom Turner, will help the company move forward with its HTML5 development, new discounts and long-term goals.

“Going forward, the startup also plans to integrate with PayPal and Amazon, along with adding credit and debit card-loading and card-linked discounts and deals,” TechCrunch wrote in its report.

The round of funding comes in addition to the $500,000 in seed capital that the Texas-based company raised in 2010. To date, roughly $1.35 million has been invested in the startup.
