Delivery platform DoorDash is launching a gas rewards program to offset some of the higher fuel prices drivers are paying at the pump, according to a press release on Wednesday (March 16).

The dual-tiered Gas Rewards program sprung from driver feedback and is aimed at helping them maintain their level of earnings despite higher fuel prices. Qualifying drivers can get rewards ranging from $1.65 to $2 per gallon.

Drivers will get 10% cashback when purchasing gas using DasherDirect, the company’s debit card for drivers. Drivers get cashback for any gas purchase, even if they are not completing deliveries at the time. Weekly bonuses are also being implemented for Dashers who drive the most miles.

“These new programs will give me significant support right now,” said Vanessa H., a Dasher from Los Angeles, California. “The ability to save at any gas station, no matter where you are, is huge. And this won’t just help Dashers when they are dashing — I commute five times a week as a grad student, and getting cash back at the pump is going to be a big relief and really help me make ends meet.”

Higher gas prices have taken a bite out of gig workers’ paychecks, and companies are coming up with ways to keep drivers on the road. Uber announced it was going to start charging customers a fuel fee of up to 55 cents for rides and 45 cents for Uber Eats orders. The fees will be passed on to drivers for a minimum of 60 days.

Launched in 2013 and headquartered in Silicon Valley, DoorDash had 3 million drivers in the fourth quarter of 2021 and over 6 million in all of 2021 in the U.S. DoorDash has 56% of the food delivery market share, it is the largest food delivery company in the U.S.
