Citgo, P97 Networks Team On Mobile Payments

Citgo is entering into a new relationship with the cloud-based mobile commerce company P97 to help consumers buy food, fuel or other items via mobile app, according to a press release.

The app, the release stated, will integrate Connected Car and Citgo’s shopper loyalty program with new mobile commerce technology.

Kevin Kinney, general manager of Brand Equity for Citgo, said  in the release that the impetus for the partnership was to keep the intertwining of technology with peoples’ lives going.

“Because technology is so integrated into our everyday lives, consumers want it at the pump too,” he said, according to the release. “So, we expect this new mobile technology to help drive customers to our retail locations. Our partnership with P97 is just the beginning of other similar ventures.”

P97 Founder and CEO Donald Frieden said in the release that the new partnership would help foster better transactions overall.

“Rolling out mobile capabilities that will facilitate secure, contactless transactions for their shoppers will be a game changer for the Citgo retail network,” he said, according to the release. “Likewise, this partnership will strengthen P97’s offer in all the markets we serve.”

Frieden told PYMNTS last year that convenience stores and gas stations could evolve into the modern age with new delivery tactics making shopping easier as people become more accustomed to mobile and digital shopping options. He said consumers are visiting convenience stores less as they have to make fewer gas runs because vehicles are becoming more fuel efficient. So, each visit becomes more important.

Evolution could come through quicker, frictionless payments and deliveries, and having fresh, made-to-order food ready and available. The food option could include making a store’s own food or partnering with an existing brand. Some stores have also included storage lockers for eCommerce packages.
