Pierre Petit pointed to four, key factors for successful SEPA implementation: competition, standardization, innovation and right level of integration. With regards to SEPA credit migration and direct debit, he voiced his belief that regulation is needed in order to establish the two, separate end dates, and furthermore, help the project avoid “serious risk of failure.” He also addressed the need for card standardization in order to foster a truly competitive card ecosystem in Europe, as well as investment in emerging payments so as not to lose ground to other markets like the United States.
