MasterCard Brings PayPass, NFC To Japan

MasterCard will deploy 410,000 contactless terminals in Japan over the next three years, the company revealed Thursday.

    The terminals will come enabled with MasterCard’s PayPass, which is presently accepted at nearly 900,000 merchant locations in 51 countries. According to the release, early adoption and penetration of NFC payments in Japan led to over 2 trillion yet in transactions in 2011.

With the introduction of MasterCard’s contactless terminals across the country, cardholders traveling from abroad will get the benefit of safe and secure contactless payments in Japan,” said Robert Luton, division president of MasterCard Japan. “We look forward to providing more contactless payments opportunities for cardholders around the globe when they visit Japan, through a wider range of MasterCard-enabled cards and devices.”
