Too Many NFC Terminals, Not Enough Users

New research from Berg Insight reported that mobile wallet services are now present in 13 countries as of March 2013, reported Mobile Europe. The number of mobile wallet services have more than doubled since 2011. During that time only six countries had such payment services.

    By the end of 2012, NFC handset sales increased by 300 percent and reached 140 million units. At present there are 170 million NFC enabled handsets around the world in total, which is 3.3 percent of all mobile handsets that exist.

    Despite the surge in NFC technology, the number of consumers who are making NFC mobile payments remains very small.

    Lars Kurkinen from Berg Insight, stated, “With the exception of a few projects in Asia-Pacific, there are only three NFC mobile wallet services in the world that have an effective addressable market of more than 100,000 people. These three services are Google Wallet and Isis in the US and Turkcell Wallet in Turkey.”
