Amazon’s Hip To Be (Like) Square
It looks like digital commerce giant Amazon is ready to step into the ring against Square—the business that launched 1,000 mPos terminals. The eRetailer is reportedly preparing to launch its own mobile credit card reading hardware, according to internal Staples documents obtained by 9to5Mac. That launch is apparently set for the very near future of the next couple of weeks.
According to the material obtained from Staples, the office supply chain is planning to begin sale of a new product called the “Amazon Card Reader” alongside existing card readers from Square, PayPal, and its own house brand.
The release is timed to coincide with Amazon’s release of its own mobile wallet app last week, and it is thought the new reader may sync up with the Amazon wallet.
Though the exact release date is unknown, the Staples document did reference August 12th as the date that signs relating to the new Amazon release are to be held until, so it seems likely the release date will be at or near then.
In a separate effort, sources say that Amazon’s Lab126 hardware division is developing biometric fingerprint scanner-based mobile payment products.
